Interesting or Important?

Two days session with Dr Roland Xavier on Creativity & Innovation are completely different to what we had with Prof Barjoyai. Personally, I think the trainer is more criticizing (although not always positive) to our ideas compared to Prof Barjoyai whivh I noticed only applauded for the ideas that he thinks as a marvellous or completely an outstanding beyond aour imagination. There are pros and cons to have people criticise you, whether you became negative and afraid to give more ideas or you become better since you can improve in which area you have weaknesses.

Interesting or Important?

I think previous lessons with Prof Barjoyai had made us not to be afraid of thinking differently. However, after that step, we had to focus whether our ideas are workable and worthy. Let's take an example. Let say, you are going to open a business. And chose to open a restaurant and wanted to offer traditional food that is so popular among the citizens. To rate is it a worthy decision, think whether it is an interesting or important ideas? The answer is it is INTERESTING. Interesting because customers always have choices not to opt for your business because there are thousands of other restaurants are offering the same things as yours, and it is easily being copied by other restaurant-owners.

So what are important ideas? The example are like opening an institution that can check whether foods contain halal product, opening a learning institution that can educate children rather than exam oriented one or open a nursery for the elderly so that they can hang around there during the day and can go home to spend time with family at night. The point is, to make the ideas IMPORTANT, you have to come out with solutions of the problems that are currently being sought by the customers. And you can become the big players rather than being a competitor, because the business world is tough, and the chances to survive is very low.

Well, one thing is that I think Dr Xavier taught our project is an important idea.. that's a good one. =)

Three days with Prof Barjoyai

On Creativity Thinking skills with Prof Barjoyai

Overall, what I can recalled of the lessons with Prof are full of excitements, being awed and discovering one self’s capabilities to become creative beyond our own acknowledgement. The adventures are simply recorded in the corner of my mind as I wrote below.

Day 1
At the beginning, knowing his name has turned me perplexed. I was guessing that maybe he was born creative; his name was also given to him by a creative father. Later, I learned that the story was so different from what I imagined. It is too personal I think it is not appropriate to record it here. And the best thing is that I came to learned that Prof is very experience person and we should be grateful that we were given an opportunity to meet such person.

The first task that he asked us to do is to just jot down whatever innovative idea that we had in mind without thinking whether it is possible. All ‘crazy’ and very unexpected ideas were presented. Interestingly, some of our ideas are not far from what was invented. Sadly, the innovative products are not very popular in the market simply because it is too weird and not sense that people could not accept it in the market. So, it dies or at least became non-marketable.

keep standing while sleeping in train! This is better.

The point is that no matter how weird your ideas are, you will have to have faith in yourself. And this is where most people had a problem with. You see, not many people had faith in Colonel Sounder’s recipe in the first place, and so did the case of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter. They are now known because of their innovative ideas. So what actually make us different to those people are that our self confidence and inner faith.

That is why there was a session that Prof Barjoyai had on Neuro-linguistic Programming(NLP), to prove to us that if we have inner faith and have our sub-conscious mind to focus on our faith, we can do whatever we’re thinking of. The task is unbelievaWe were asked to stab raw potatoes by using a straw. Non-sense but actually some of us nailed it. But me? I am still figuring how, but to start doing it I think it is such a waste on food. I’ll try to figure out when to do that later. That will definitely be in my new year’s wish list.

to be continued..

Integrity

Remember my previous post on ‘Conducting Effective Meeting”? There is something always mentioned by Prof Khir that lingers in my mind and it’s getting stronger each day now. He kept reminding us about being ‘amanah’ or in English I think the best term is integrity.

Being so sleepy in his class, there was some point I can’t control my eyes. And I believed he actually saw me during my ‘eyes-closing’ because I did notice that when I opened my eyes, he gave me a little glance that is the same with Mr. Goh, my physic teacher back in secondary school.
But something he said later had hit me in the heart it gave an impact that still I could not forget till today. His reminder is no stranger to me, it was mentioned again and again back during university. At that time, I was also sponsored to study. And each time the issue of money is being raised again and again, I could not help but instill that principle of being ‘amanah’ with my allowences to the end of my studies period.

And I am very grateful again that it was Prof Khir that has reminded me. Yeah, every human being needs constant reminder from God so that we are not astray. Maybe I was called to write on the subject because most of us now are anticipating the promised Rm1000 allowances per month that was allocated for each trainee. I hope that with this small reminder, all of us is being true to himself, as a matter of fact, Allah do knows who is. For each amount of money that was trusted to us, for each food that we bought with the money, and from which it becomes apart of our own body. We will sure enough are going to be questioned one day. And it is the day of Resurrection.

Alhamdulillah, in each prayer we were told to recite
‘Guide us to the right path,The path of those whom Thou hast favoured, Not the path of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray’ (Al-fatihah:4-5)

And again Alhamdulillah for the opportunity to write this
and for you to be reminded. =)

Presentation

Two weeks before the day of finale presentation En Abdullah Md Yunos aka Encik Lah and Pn Rusilawati had a two day sessions with us on the topic of "Powerful Presentation Skills"
The important thing that was reminded to us again and again is that we have to know the topic to be presented very well beforehand so that it will help and relect our credibility when we are in front of the audience.

Our finale presentation on the last day of the communication module (28/12/2010) should be on our proposed product/project that worth 30 million ringgit. Basically, it was like a mock proposal and presentation that you have to deliver in order to gain interest and convince the investors for that 30 million ringgit. Since it is a mock presentation, we can not actually fully-utilized the adviced given by Encik Lah and Pn Rusilawati. We really did not do the actual market survey or budget, so, most of us had problems in dealing with our fears. What if the things that we presented do not make sense at all? What if the budget is not enough to run the business? And the ‘what if’s lists goes on and on.

After all, we already had done it. My group, XX Power had come up with the an eco-pineapple leaf fibre(eco-PALF). It is a fibre derived from the leaves of pineapple that usually are not use for any purposes and are treated as waste. Usually they just burned it. Initially, we try to find any agriculture waste that can be turn into a 'green product', we landed on doing baggase(sago waste that can be use to soak oil spill and degrades the oil) but later we decided not to use that baggase since it is already being well commercialised in the USA.

Instead of opting for a specific product like PALF diapers, we decided to be the producer of the eco-PALF and our target are the medium sized companies that is currently using synthetic fibres. I personally thinks it is much better to opt for the former than the latter but other group mates said it is better to do it that way.

I was kind of disappointed that I am not able to catch up with other groups presentation (except for Futura and Bioself) since I had to leave for an interview later that evening. Each time we had representatives from each group to come in front and explain their product in terms of the subjects learned on that day, I have to constantly ask my neighbour, P-nat. And I kept mixing them up. It's just a matter of time for me to learn which product belongs to which group. Well, I realized that most of the product are eco-friendly-using-waste-and-turn-into-wealth-stuffs. It's the most crucial thing to be addressed in our scientific world, I guess.

Neurolinguistic Programming

I really do not have any idea what Neuro-linguistic Programming(NLP) is all about and what I had in mind is it have something to do with brain(because of the word neuro) and language(lingusitic). So I just guessed that the session will be on how to structure your language by using brains. Or the other way round. lol

It was completely an alien word to most of us I think. The trainer, Mr Faizal Kamal, looks like a motivator to me. Well, I bet NLP requires more than one day session to really get us 'digest' and understand the whole concept. What we actually did on that day was mostly psychological activities.

The best part is that there is a test to know what kind of a person you are, whether you are an audio person, visual or kinesthetic person.

Interestingly, I was selected to volunteer in front for Mr Faizal wanted to show us how people can use mind to connect with other people. Two of us had to close our minds and relaxed, and our physiological have to be perfectly the same way(Other two girls were asked to make sure of it). I have to try to 'feel' and 'connects' to Ain's mind,to connects to what she was feeling(she was told to recall a memory that involves either happiness or sadness). I was trying so hard (I think) although I don't have any idea how to do it, I just sat tring to be calm as hard as I can, but actually I was getting quite nervous what will happened. I kept answering that I can't guess what Ain was feeling. I heard Mr Faizal then asked Ain to try to project the feelings harder. Then, my closed eyelids were moving uncontrollably. It was unbelievable that later my eyes were teary. I was unsure why it happened, I guessed maybe because I closed my eyes and tried hard enough to control my eyes not to move. When Mr Faizal asked again, I just said I still can't. Mr faizal cut the session off and asked me again loudly what Ain was thinking about.
At this point, I just guessed that the memory Ain was thinking is a sad one. And surprisingly it is true! I saw Ain's eyes were teary too after being asked by Mr Faizal whether my guess us true or not. On my way to my seat, I could not help but tears were rolling down my cheeks.

I still could not register myself to what had happened. I asked a sister what it might be about. She make sense when she relates NLP to intuition. How mothers can actually felt the same emotion although they are farther apart from their children. Or how a twins can had the same food poisoning symptoms although there are worlds apart and did not eat the same dish. Bizarre but it happened. Only Allah knows better.

Too much of drama in DEALING?

On negotiation skills with Mr. Hisham.

The first thing that came to mind when we thought of negotiation is probably when you are out shopping in JALAN TAR or PETALING STREET doing bargains to get cheapest price for any goods. Yeah, that's right but there are more than that. Negotiation skills are unavoidable in work, relationships and in livings of course.

We had the two days session for the topic itself. I bet it might be the most important skills one should had for an effective communication. Undoubtedly, Mr Hisham had the best way to make us learned the topic. He had turned the lesson into a very fun and funny way it is!

After an experience on Public speaking with Mr HIsham, I did expect that we will have to do spontaneous negotiation at least to try out practically how to do it. But, what happened was really amazing, very melodramatic performance by the BEST participants. I could not believe that some really had talents in acting! lol

There was a task given by Mr Hisham that we had to write a story(with negotiation part) in pairs and personally can chose whoever the actor/actresses. Ours had be chosen (me and Fana) and it was simply amazing to watch Linda and Hakim nailed it. The story is about a daughter who is currently have to move into KL to further study, and find the needs to have more allowances from her father. Most of the part was improvised by both of actors. Although it is a good performance by them, there were other plays which is better than our story. I don't mind anyway, because I actually felt contented that mine was chosen out of thirties stories written on that day.

Well, the most important thing than the ONLY FUN I mentioned about negotiation skills learned are that emotions should not be involved when you are trying to negotiate.Be professional and try to reach an agreement where both parties are satisfied and try as much as possible to avoid over-ruling the other parties. There might be more that one session of negotiation, until you can reach the best decision for all.

Public Speaking.....Cont'd

My group were given the chance to freely choose a specific topic under the topic of Information Technology. It was a very broad subject so I really don't have any idea what to speak about until I came across a very interesting topic while surfing the internet. I decide that my topic is "Hoe to manage having multiple account without having problem forgetting username and passwords". Wow, that's a long title right? lol.

I really looked forward for Mr Hisham comments after I had done with my turn. What I got are "Very interesting topic, too much of reading and I like you better the last time when you're acting".

I anticipated that he would say I have a lot of fillers(aaaa...) or something like that, well I can't remember whether I actually have that common 'aaa' in my speech on that day. But he like me better at acting? Haha.. maybe he would say he likes me talking spontaneously rather than on structured speech.

Interestingly, everyone can actually speak! This proves that "When you put your mind on something, you can actually did it". Forget about the flaws, this is just the only BEGINNING.
